Hear From Your Workmates.
"It all started with that health check."
"Last year, I attended the company health checks. To be honest, I didn’t think much of it at the time—it felt like just another thing to tick off. But the results stuck with me: I was overweight and showing signs of high stress. I didn’t make any immediate changes, but those words sat quietly in the back of my mind. Life carried on, but the thought of where my health was heading kept resurfacing. Then one day, a colleague walked past me and casually mentioned he was going for a walk. On impulse, I said, “I’ll come too.” That simple choice was the turning point. The first couple of weeks were tough—especially getting up that hill. I had to stop frequently, and it felt like a real struggle. But I stuck with it. With support from the nutritional advice available through EAP, I started making healthier food choices. The walks got longer, the hill got easier, and soon I added strength classes and cycling to the mix. Now, I walk at least 7 km a day. I’ve lost 10 kg, dropped two clothing sizes, and I genuinely feel great. My weekends are now filled with long hikes and time outdoors—things I never thought I’d enjoy this much. And most importantly, I feel proud of where I’m heading. It all started with that health check. If you’re wondering whether it’s worth it—just go. Take 15 minutes for yourself. You never know what it might spark. It changed my life. It might just change yours too."
"I’m glad I caught it early!"
"I thought my health check results would be fine as I keep fit and healthy, although my health check flagged something with my eyes. It turned out part of my cornea was wearing away from overusing contact lenses. I’m glad I caught it early!"
"It's all covered by my health insurance."
"I was surprised when my health check flagged issues with my hearing. I was referred to a specialist who advised it was due to issues with my sinuses not my actual hearing. A surgical fix is required and is all covered by my health insurance."
FAQ
What is the purpose of an annual Health Check?
Health Checks are designed to give you valuable insights into your current health status, helping you to identify strengths and potential areas of concern. These checks are preventive and informational, not a replacement for professional medical advice or treatment.
A Health Check is a proactive measure to ensure the wellbeing of all kaimahi.
Why is our company offering Health Checks?
The health of our kaimahi is of great importance to us. Health Checks form one of our Wellness Framework initiatives (our Container Ship model), supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of our kaimahi.
What does the Health Check involve?
The Health Check begins with a brief questionnaire about your general health, habits, and existing health issues.
This is followed by a physical examination to measure blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol levels, body composition, and checks for vision.
The tests are non-invasive and include a quick finger prick. All tests are voluntary.
How long will the Health Check take?
The digital questionnaire will take approximately 5 minutes to complete, and we require you to complete this online prior to arriving at your Health Check.
The physical Health Check will take 15-20 minutes and will take place onsite during working hours.
What happens after the Health Check?
At the end of your Health Check, you will receive a comprehensive report detailing your results. Only the health professional conducting your test and presenting your report will see your personalised results. The report will also include any potential health risks identified and recommendations for follow-up actions, such as consultations with your GP.
Is there any cost to me for the Health Check?
No, the Health Check is provided free of charge to all kaimahi at Port Otago.
Do I need to prepare anything for the Health Check?
For best accuracy, avoid smoking, vaping, consuming caffeine, or eating large meals shortly before your check.
You’ll receive a preparation guide via email to help you get ready. While these preparation requirements are recommended for best results, they should not prevent you from going through the process, as we will adjust as necessary. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring those along for the vision test.
How is my privacy protected during and after the Health Check?
All information collected during your Health Check is confidential and will only be used to assess your health and provide recommendations. Only the health professional conducting your test and presenting your report will see your results.
Anonymised and aggregated data will be used to analyse the overall health of our organisation. This helps us develop targeted health and wellness initiatives for kaimahi at Port Otago.
What if I have specific health concerns?
If you have specific health concerns, please mention them during your questionnaire or to the health professional conducting your check. It’s still a good idea to have a Health Check to assess the rest of your health.
What if I need to reschedule my appointment?
You can reschedule your appointment via the link provided in your appointment email or calendar invitation. Alternatively, contact us at health.check@unimed.co.nz and we will help you. Please try to give as much notice as possible to allow others to use the available slot.
Who will be conducting the Health Checks?
The Health Checks will be conducted by qualified health professionals, including a qualified Nurse and a Health Coach.
How often should I have a Health Check?
It's recommended to have a Health Check annually to monitor any changes in your health status and to catch any potential health issues early.
What if I am uncomfortable with any part of the Health Check?
If you are uncomfortable with any part of the Health Check, please discuss this with the health professional conducting the check. They can modify the procedure or provide reassurances about your concerns.
How will my health insurance cover be involved in any follow-up treatment?
If follow-up treatment is recommended, your UniMed Health Plan policy can be used to cover or partially cover these services, depending on your plan. Port Otago also provide kamahi benefits such as EAP (counselling, nutrition advice, financial wellbeing etc). Please check your UniMed Health Plan policy details or check the intranet for more information.
Do I need to partake in the recommendations from my Health Check results?
While we may recommend pathways for enhanced care based on your Health Check results, the decision to engage with any healthcare professionals or follow these recommendations is entirely up to you.
Are the Health Checks mandatory for all kaimahi?
Participation in Health Checks is highly encouraged but not mandatory. We believe in supporting your health and wellbeing, and taking part can provide you with valuable insights into your health.
What are the implications if I choose not to participate?
Choosing to participate or not will not affect your job status, benefits, health insurance plan or relationship with the company in any way. We respect your decision and ensure that it has no impact on your employment.
What measures are in place to ensure the Health Checks are safe?
All equipment is sterilised, and all health professionals conducting the checks follow strict hygiene protocols to ensure the safety of all participants, especially considering ongoing health concerns like COVID-19.
What support is available if the Health Check results indicate a problem?
If your results indicate any health issues, you will receive guidance on the next steps at the time of your Health Check, including which health care professional or service would be best to support your needs.
