21 November 2023

I am pleased to announce, that we are one step closer to combining the Accuro and UniMed memberships, following a positive second vote by Accuro members at two Special General Meetings held on the 30th of October and 20th November.

This initiative is part of our long-term strategic growth plan and helps us deliver on our promise of keeping people in lifelong good health. It’s an exciting milestone for UniMed.

What are the next steps in this process?

Now that Accuro members have approved the proposal, the next step is for a portfolio transfer application to be made to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand – a process that is likely to take until early next year.

If approved by the RBNZ, Accuro’s insurance portfolio and activities would be transferred to UniMed early in 2024.

What is being proposed?

Since UniMed was created in 1979, our organisation has been focussed on growing the positive impact we have on the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders. As part of our strategic growth plans, our Board is proposing to combine the UniMed and Accuro (Accuro Health Insurance Ltd) memberships.

Like UniMed, Accuro is a not-for-profit mutual society, and we share a focus on keeping people in lifelong good health. We believe this proposal will not only help us continue delivering that promise, but also provide more opportunities to meet your health needs now and into the future.

Please note that the process of transferring Accuro members to UniMed will not affect your current health cover with UniMed and you will continue to receive the same cover and benefits.

Why are the Accuro and UniMed memberships combining?

The Accuro transfer will result in a combined membership of over 140,000 and a team of nearly 100 staff, making UniMed the country’s third largest health insurer, operating under two brands.  This scale means we will be able to improve services, provide better value, and create the opportunity for more product and service innovation in the future.
